Pursuit of Happiness

“If You’re Happy and You Know It.” When reading the title of this children’s song, does it singsong through your brain, do your hands want to clap together, or do the corners of your mouth want to turn upward? If your answer is yes, you are not alone. Happiness, a seemingly elusive state people are forever seeking. According to  the unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America July 4, 1776, “all men are
created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The pursuit of happiness, hmmm… what does this mean? Is it a wild chase after the latest gadgets, gizmos, and money? If this were true, celebrities, corporate executives and millionaires should be extremely content while wearing perpetual smiles on their faces and clapping their hands. (Job 31:25) If the heart is the very center of personality, as Hebrew culture believes, the center of the emotions as well as the mind, including the thinking process, then isn’t the pursuit of happiness an inward journey? If this is true, then the inward journey does not depend on the things we possess or life circumstances going well; it depends on the Person we come to know during the journey, the source of true contentment. (Psalm 146:5, 2 Corinthians 12:10, Philippians 4:11 KJV) How happy are you today?
