Today is February 2, Ground Hog Day, and Punxsutawney Phil saw his own shadow declaring six more weeks of winter. I do not think he relayed this message to the skunks and springtime flowers. The foul smell of those black-and-white mammals has polluted the air for days and my crocus and daffodils are poking their heads out the ground. Then again, this well-respected, furry short-legged animal may have passed along his proclamation to these hibernating creations, who listened instead to the unseasonably warm temperatures fooling them into thinking the March equinox, the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere, has arrived. Their ears were itchy for what they wanted to hear, something to make them feel good, not the truth their God-given instincts, and Phil, were telling them. (2 Timothy 4:1-5) Hmmm… how often do our ears prickle for something other than the truth?
